Update on my remarks on the previous thread

Re: Kurdistan, I have taken the parts of the history of Kurdistan as recorded in
the "Wkipedia", the free encyhclopedia, "Kurdistan covers large areas of eastern Turkey, Northern Iraq, Northwestern Iran and small parts of
Syria and Armenia". To continue on quotes from Wkipedia, " In the 16th century, Kurdish inhabited areas were split between Safavid, Iran and the Ottoman Empire. This was formalized in 1639. Before WWI most Kurds lived within the bounderies aof the Ottoman Empire in the province of Kurdistan. After the collape of the Ottoman Empire the Allies agreed and planned to create several countries within its former bounderies. Originally Kurdistan, along with Armenia was to be one. According to the treaty of Sevres, however this treaty was never ratified. The reconquest of these areas by Karmel Ataturk, other pressing issues caused the allies to accept the renegotiated Treaty of Lausanne, accepting the modern border of the Republic of Turkey and leaving the Kurds without a selfruled region. Other Kurdish area were assigned to the new
British and French mandated states of Iraq and Syria under both treaties.
At the end of the first Gulf War, the allies established a safe haven in Nothern Iraq. Amid the withdrawal of all Iraqi troops from Kurdistan there emerged an atonomus entity with its own government and parliment in 1992."
I knew England had to be in there somewhere. And this is it in a nutshell....

Well, somewhat right, but not totally. I thought they and the French were all over this area for many many years. Nothing changes....stay well....

And why do the Kurds need their own country? We all live in relative peace in the United States. Turkey is a democracy, and the Kurds do have a voice in the government ... maybe they can't deal with being a minority.

I know Paul, but they have been wanting their own country for many years. Probably what they had under the Ottoman Empire, not sure. Anyway, that type of politics they are accustomed to. The military will not allow the government to stray too far away from the Nation that Karmel Ataturk established years ago. He was to the Turks what Abraham Lincoln was to this country. He abolished the Fez and the vail, monogomy, new language, currency etc. One will find his picture everywhere in Turkey. They are a proud people with many ethnicities clling themselves Turks, (except the greeks)See Cyprus,,,I get cryptic because I am not that versed in Cyprus history. stay well......

I appreciate your comment to my blog post on US-Russian relations the other day.

In my view, Kurds autonomy is yes, but dissolving the Iraqi state is no. As Turkey suggests invasion to Northern Iraq, this is critical.

You mention Kemal? I think highly of him, because he succeeded in following Japan's path for Westernization and modernization.

Good report and I like your "I knew England had to be in there somewhere." Yes, our good friends the Brits were always in the action, they knew about nation building. In ref to the Kurds and Turkey issue, it is very serious but nobody is paying attention and it could exploded in front of our noses [and then what are we going to do about it?]. Have a fine Maine day.

LRB, I put the reference to England in there because I remember years, years, years ago, I think it was before Nassar in Egypt, we were on the case of England and France in Africa and the Middle East. As far as Turkey vs the PKK. Turkey has already started to retaliate. They have bombed areas or terrorist already.... I ramble.....stay well.....
